A Wild Winter Break – Page 19
"One hundred percent chance of snow tonight, accumulating 2 to 4 inches. Windy with 80 percent chance of snow Thursday, winds 15 to 20 mph." That’s what the Muncie Evening Press had to say about the weather on Wednesday, January 25, but what most students awoke to on Thursday looked quite a bit different. A storm of blizzard proportions raged throughout Wednesday night and Thursday, virtually paralyzing Muncie and the entire Midwest. The city became a ghost town, as all but the most vital businesses closed down, and traffic was reduced to only emergency vehicles.
Most students learned for the first time what it was like to be snowbound, as they waited for snowplows to clear the five and six-foot drifts left by the blizzard. The bad weather cancelled classes and most chool activities for seven day, leaving students with very little to do during their unexpected winter vacation. Although anxious to return to classes, some students were already saying, "Only 41 days ‘til spring vacation!"
