Homecoming Marks ‘Beginnings’ – Page 8

After a six year wait, Northside High School’s first Homecoming became a reality in 1977. The idea was initiated by seniors Stan Buck and Tom Moran in early spring. As co-chairmen of the event, they presented their plans to the administration for approval and began working to raise student support for the project. The Student Organizational Council chose the theme of ‘Beginnings."

A pep roast on Thursday evening was the first Homecoming event. Students gathered around a blazing bonfire as coach Terry Hitchcock encouraged everyone to "fire-up" for the Friday night game. Afterwards, a crowd gathered in the cafeteria with the group "Spokane."

A pep session included a speech by Michael Duerson, a former North student and athlete. Toy wagon floats made up a parade of floats constructed by the classes and clubs. The Honor Society too top honors with their float depicting the "Titan Steamroller." Homecoming faculty adviser Mr. Robert Warner became the first Northside Homecoming Queen. Competition cheers and music by the Stage Band succeeded in firing-up the football team and student body for the climax – the Titan clash with the Huntington North Vikings.
